DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD RESEARCH

I began the process of developing my own double page spread for my magazine named '11', by searching up existing double page spread articles from famous music magazines including 'Q', 'NME' and 'Billboard'. This helped me to become aware of an audiences expectations for a double page spread and to get an idea of the layouts of them. Whilst looking at a range of double page spread articles, I noticed that the majority of the articles featuring male artists included multiple images, whereas the articles about female artists usually only contain one large scale image. I also noticed that a lot of the double page spreads have their large images that consume an entire page located on the left and have the writing on the right. All of the articles make their headlines large scale and bold and some use quotes from the artist as the headline to engage the audience and make the article seem more interesting and personal to the singer.

PHOTOS:

The mise en scene of these photographs are appropriate for the Alternative/ Rock genre, however, the photos taken on the millennium bridge have too much motion blur, and the ones taken at Greenwich are too close to the models face.

These images are more suitable to be used for my magazines DPS due to the framing of them. The models costume and NVC also reflects a typical 'bad' Alternative/ Rock artist.

FONTS:

I am going to using this font for the stand first and pull quote on my double page spread article. I think this will be effective as it is modern looking due to the fact it is a sans serif font, and is not over powering so will not distract audiences attention from other features of the DPS like the headline.

I have decided to use this font for the headline of my double page spread article as it conforms well to traditionally used fonts for Alternative/ Rock magazines. The fact that it is a sans serif font makes it seem more modern and masculine meaning that it will be reflective of the artist that my DPS features.

COLOUR SCHEME:

I have decided to use a red, white and black colour scheme for my double page spread, similarly to Q magazine. This colour scheme was also the most popular in my audience research, meaning that it will attract attention from my target audience and reflect the Alternative/ Rock genre well.

ARTIST:

My solo artist who is featured in my double page spread is a young male character from London who's fashion style and personality is heavily influenced by Matt Healy from The 1975. He is going to be a down to earth person who doesn't allow fame to consume him. He is also someone who has experienced a lot of negativity in his life which has resulted in him having a drug addiction - similarly to other famous Alternative/ Rock artists such as Kurt Cobain and Anthony Kiedis.
